Ryan Kienle and Those Old Bones
G&L artist Ryan Kienle has a new project with ‘Matchbook Romance’ bandmate Ryan DePaolo. ‘Those Old Bones’ is the new creative outlet for the duo and the third single, “We Own The Night,” is streaming exclusively on altpress.com today. Ryan told us that the entire project was recorded with his “fleet” of G&L SB-2 basses, and gave us the low-down on the new single.
“I used my 2002 G&L custom SB-2 which has a swamp ash body and maple neck, with a fresh set of DR High Beams (.125 – .65) tuned to Bb through Db. All takes were played with my fingers, with the bridge pickup rolled back ever so slightly, and run through an Aguilar Amplification Tonehammer Preamp/DI. Both the Tonehammer and the “wet” out from the 1/4″ ran directly into a Neve compressor. Each output was then sent to separate channels on an API 3124+ preamp before hitting Pro Tools HD. Lately I have found the sweet spot on the preamp to be the Gain set around 9:30 and the AGS engaged. Beyond that, I use the EQ to slightly boost the Bass, push the Treble and use the mid-frequency selector to find just the right growl from the AGS to suit each track. As you can see in the picture, I run a fairly flat setting. The results are THUNDEROUS and come mainly from my beautiful sounding bass!”
